Advisory for August 17, 2019
United Steelworkers, AFL-CIO to Hold “Family Day & Workers’ Rights Cookout” in Fayetteville
What: “Fayetteville Family Day & Workers’ Rights Cookout”
When: Saturday, August 17th from 10 AM to 2 PM; speakers at 12:30 PM
Where: USW Local 959, 280 McCloskey Rd, Fayetteville, NC 28311
Why: Too many people work hard but still can’t make ends meet and feel increasingly isolated from one another and ignored by policy makers, especially in our more rural counties. This Family Day & Workers’ Rights Cookout is an opportunity for workers to build community and to make their voices heard.
Who: United Steelworkers Local 959, NC State AFL-CIO, and Greater Sandhills Central Labor Council along with 9th Congressional District candidate Dan McCready and state labor federation president MaryBe McMillan
More Info: On August 17th at 10 AM in Fayetteville, USW Local 959, which represents almost 2,000 people working at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, is teaming up with the NC State AFL-CIO and the Greater Sandhills CLC to host a “Fayetteville Family Day & Workers’ Rights Cookout.” At the family day and cookout, workers, union and community members, and local elected officials and candidates, including Dan McCready, will come together for food, fun, and community building; to share personal stories of victories and challenges in the workplace and in public policy; and to declare that working together, especially in unions, is the best way for working people to reclaim our freedoms. The topic of the brief program during the cookout will be the AFL-CIO’s 9-point Workers’ Bill of Rights. The event also will feature the first-ever Sandhills exhibition of “North Carolina Labor History Revealed,” which presents the rich history of worker organizing in our state. Free food, live music, clothing giveaways, vendors, workshops, and kids’ activities, including a bounce house, will be provided.
