Hagan needs to hear from us

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced he will offer the DREAM Act as an amendment to the Department of Defense authorization bill. A vote will likely occur this week and require 60 votes.

The Developmental, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act will allow undocumented students who have lived in the United States for at least five years and have graduated from high school or received a graduate equivalency diploma (GED) to legalize their immigration status if they attend college or serve in the military.

Last month, the AFL-CIO Executive Council issued a statement calling on Congress to take immediate steps to pass the DREAM Act in 2010 as a down payment to comprehensive immigration reform.

  • The DREAM Act is a modest and common sense approach that will give hard-working students an opportunity to go to college, serve in the military and become productive tax-paying citizens.
  • The DREAM Act will help young people who were brought the US as children, have grown-up in this country and attended local schools.
  • DREAM Act students are valedictorians, honor students, star athletes and talented artists. They have waited almost 10 years for this legislation to become law. The time to act is now.
  • The Department of Defense authorization bill is a great vehicle for this bill. The DREAM will encourage bright and hard-working students to serve in our military.

Call for the DREAM Act

North Carolina Senator Kay Hagan has a choice to make: provide an opportunity for the children of undocumented immigrants who have been raised in this country to achieve the American Dream or punish them for the actions of their parents. On this, she needs to hear from us all:

  • Call her Washington, DC Office at 202-224-6342, and
  • Call her Greensboro Office (State Headquarters) at 336-333-5311.

Here are some tips for making your call:

  • Start by giving the person who answers your name and where you're calling from:
"My name is Jeremy, and I live in Raleigh, NC."
  • Tell him/her what you want Sen. Hagan to do:
"I want Senator Hagan to VOTE YES on the DREAM Act."
  • Use one of the talking points above or your own reason why Hagan should vote for this bill.
  • Be polite and speak from the heart.
