Ask North Carolina members of Congress to demand answers from SSA on plans to end face-to-face customer service
The Social Security Administration has a new 10-year vision plan, Vision 2015, that places heavy emphasis on virtual service, ignoring the time-tested model of face-to-face service, setting the stage for closures of field offices across the country. Field office employees help navigate the complex processes of Social Security and offer personal help through major life events. Under this vision plan, those employees will likely only be accessible through virtual channels.
SSA closed over 70 field offices and 500 contact stations from FY11 to FY14. They are continuing an aggressive campaign to coerce the public to file claims online and to do other SSA business through MySSA. Many field offices experience standing room only crowds of customers electing face-to-face service as their primary method of doing SSA business.
Congresswoman Cheri Bustos is circulating a “Dear Colleague” letter, which is our chance to make SSA describes to Congress, in writing, its plans for Field Offices. There is no room to be vague about face-to-face service and the role of field offices over the next 10 years.
We need your help asking members of the North Carolina Congressional Delegation to sign this letter.
- Click the link to read the Dear Colleague letter.
- Call 202-224-3121 and give the operator the name of your representative. (If you don’t know your representative’s name, click here to look it up.)
- Once the operator transfers you to your representative’s office, identify yourself and say:
“Rep. Bustos is sending a letter to the Social Security Administration Acting Commissioner Carolyn Colvin asking her to talk about her plans for the field offices, and we want [insert name of your congressperson] to sign that letter.”
- Thank the staff person for their time.
Thank you for your support! You are helping make sure that the cornerstone of service at the Social Security Administration will remain strong for the next generation!
