4-Hour Canvass in Charlotte to Kick Off Largest-Ever AFL-CIO Electoral Campaign in NC

NC Labor 2016@2x

ADVISORY for September 10, 2016

NC State AFL-CIO Will Kick Off “Labor 2016” Mobilization with 4-Hour Canvass in Charlotte

Sensing opportunity to deal a decisive blow against Donald Trump and to end Republicans’ stranglehold on state government, AFL-CIO is expanding its largest-ever electoral campaign into North Carolina

(Charlotte, NC – September 6, 2016) Buoyed by the U.S. Supreme Court’s refusal to reinstate North Carolina’s voter suppression law and by the toxic candidacy at the top of the Republican ticket, working people this week will officially launch organized labor’s largest electoral mobilization in North Carolina history. On Saturday, September 10th starting at 10:00 a.m., national, state, and local labor leaders will join retirees, union members, and their friends and families for a four-hour canvass in Charlotte to help elect Hillary Clinton, Deborah Ross, and other pro-worker candidates on the ballot in November. The kickoff event will start with a brief rally and end with knocking on voters’ doors for face-to-face conversations about how working people will be voting for a better life in North Carolina.

AFL-CIO’s Labor 2016 electoral program in North Carolina will consist of hundreds of released union staff and volunteers engaging in hundreds of thousands of hours on the phone and at the doors of working families, supported by ongoing worksite, direct mail, online, and voter protection efforts. While the focus over the next 62 days will be on defeating Donald Trump and making sure Deborah Ross and other endorsed down-ballot candidates are victorious in November, labor’s expanded electoral campaign is part of an ongoing effort to build political power for working people where it is needed most – in the South.
